How do I find who owns a domain?
Look the domain up first. The result shows the registrar, the dates, and the holder's name when the registry publishes it. Most registries now hide the holder, so the usual route to them is the registrar, which passes messages on.
Step by step
- Look up the domain. Type it in the box above. You see the registrar, when it was registered and when it expires.
- Check if the holder is shown. Companies often appear by name. Private people almost never do.
- Visit the website. An about or contact page often names the owner faster than any lookup.
- Contact the registrar. Registrars offer a contact form or address that forwards your message to the holder.
- For legal matters, request disclosure. A registrar may release hidden details for a legitimate reason, such as a trademark claim. Ask the registrar how.
If you want to buy the domain
Write to the holder through the registrar, and check when the domain expires: a name that is not renewed is released after its grace periods. Our redemption period and pending delete pages explain the timeline.
Questions
Why is the owner's name hidden?
Privacy law in many countries protects personal data, so registries and registrars hide it by default. See what redaction means.
Can I see who owned a domain before?
Not from the registry. RDAP shows the current registration only.
Is the registrar the owner?
No. The registrar is the company the owner registered the domain with. It manages the name for them.
